It's the question we're asked most: "I don't have a licence. Can I still do the loop?" Yes. Easily.
Plenty of the people who ride this loop with us have never held a motorbike licence in their lives. It changes nothing about what you'll see. You'll still climb Heaven's Gate, sit above the Nho Que at Ma Pi Leng, and wake up in a quiet valley you couldn't find on a map. You simply do it without ever being the one in the saddle.
There are two honest ways to ride the whole thing licence-free. You can go pillion on an Easy Rider, where a born-here local does the driving and you watch the mountains go by, or you can take a private car and stay off the bike entirely. Both are below. Pick the one that fits how you like to travel.
You sit on the back; your own expert local rider drives. No licence, no traffic to read. Hands free for the camera and the cold mountain air on your face.
A private air-conditioned car with your own driver-guide. No two wheels involved at any point. Door to door, warm and dry over every pass.
No hidden fees. Prices are in USD. The only optional extras are the Nho Que boat (~$6), drinks and tips.
Some travelers ask about renting a bike and self-driving the loop. We won't talk you out of it, but we will be straight with you: if you want to drive a motorbike here, you should hold a valid licence that actually covers motorbikes. The passes are real mountain roads, and we'd rather tell you that now than after you've paid.
This isn't us upselling. If you've ridden before and you're licensed, brilliant. We'll point you at our safety standards and help however we can. If you're not sure, message us and we'll talk it through honestly before you commit to anything. No pressure, no sales script.
Go pillion. You get the wind, the lean into the hairpins and the unbroken view. Your rider handles every metre of it. This is most of our no-licence guests, and they don't miss the handlebars.
Take the private car. Weather, motion sickness, traveling with kids or parents, or simply not wanting two wheels are all good reasons. You see the same Ma Pi Leng, warm and dry the whole way.

Yes, and most of our no-licence guests don't give it a second thought. There are two ways to ride the full 4-day / 3-night loop without one: go pillion behind your own local Easy Rider (you're a passenger, so no licence is needed) or take a private car with a driver-guide and never get on a bike at all.
Yes. Riding as a passenger is normal and legal here, and a passenger needs no licence of any kind. Your rider is a born-here local who rides these passes every week, you get a proper helmet, and the pace is yours, not a convoy's. More on our safety standards.
Then we'll be honest with you: you should hold a valid licence that covers motorbikes before you drive one here. We won't pretend the road doesn't ask for it. Message us on WhatsApp and we'll talk it through before you book. No sales pitch.
Pick the Easy Rider if you want the open-air ride and the wind on the passes without driving. Pick the private car if you'd rather not be on a bike at all: weather, comfort, traveling with family. Either way you see the whole loop. Both also come fully private on our private tour.
The Easy Rider is $315 per person; the private car is $720 per car for up to six people. Prices are in USD with no hidden fees and include your guide, the bike or car, three nights in private rooms, every meal, and all park, viewpoint and permit fees, including the border permit and the Ma Pi Leng skywalk. The Nho Que boat is an optional extra of about $6.
